Eunkang Koh’s new work will be on exhibition at La Taller
y Galería de Grabado in Bilbao, Spain
from June 21 through August 9, 2013. The
opening reception will be held on June 21, 2013 from 8:00 PM until 10:00 PM.
Eunkang Koh’s work focuses on the social
phenomena of our 21st century society of consumerism. She views
the lifestyle and thinking processes of humans as largely ruled and guided by
money and capitalism. “Our goals are to become richer and wealthier so
that we can consume even more.” Trying to fit into a consumer-driven culture masks
our own individuality as our identity and personality become cloaked and
defined by “consume more.” Her exhibition “The Human Shop” expresses the absurdity of the human world,
manifesting through the social phenomena of consumerism, and is visually
depicted in the creation of creature hybrids. They portray ironic gestures that create a mixture of humor
and grotesqueness, reflecting life in our consumer society.
“The
Human Shop” consists of different types of prints and
drawing, incorporating various media such as clay and magnets in depicting the
mass consumer culture in which humans live today. Koh also experiments
with human-made materials such as plastic boxes, vinyl sheets, and paper bags. Through
the eye of an artist these materials represent and symbolize the micromanaged
and controlled contemporary society.
Eunkang Koh is an Associate Professor in Printmaking/Drawing
for the Art Department of the University of Nevada Reno, College of Arts. Professor
Koh received her B.F.A. from Hong-Ik University in Seoul, Korea, and her M.F.A.
from California State University, Long Beach, California. Ms.Koh has had
significant solo and group exhibitions in the United States, South Korea,
Spain, China and Bulgaria. She also received a Nevada Arts Council Artist
Fellowship Honorable Mention Grant for fiscal year 2013.
